BandBazi theatre company was established in order to give a voice to disenfranchised groups and challenge stereotypes: to promote understanding and tolerance of other cultures, attitudes and ways of living. To achieve this it combines circus and theatre to create new, original and accessible productions.
BandBazi's inclusive Youth Circus Theatre project evolved from a series of workshops given in 2006/2007. Its members are aged 11-25 years and include refugees and asylum seekers, deaf young people, British teenagers and young people with Special Educational Needs. The group have created several pieces of devised theatre for public performance, which have incorporated trapeze, bungee, rope, physical theatre, street dance and other elemenhts.
This is complemented by an educational outreach programme with community groups, excluded young people, schools and colleges. All the company’s workshops provide the people taking parts with a means of self-expression through creative writing, circus and physical skills and improvisation. They form the backbone of the company’s commitment to bring into the theatre – both as workshop participants and audience members - groups who might not usually participate in the arts or realise the relevance they can have to their lives.
